Minister of Ministry of Interior Affairs, Mr. Wais Ahmad Barmak

وزیرMr Wais Ahmad Barmak was appointed as a Minister for the Ministry of Interior Affairs on 04 December 2017, having served since October 2015 as State Minister for Disaster Management and Humanitarian Affairs and head of the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority.

In the early days of the National Unity Government, Mr Barmak served as Special Envoy for H.E.  President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on good governance and security, followed by a short-term engagement with the UN’s International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

Between 2011 and 2013, Mr Barmak served as Minister of Rural Development and Rehabilitation (MRRD), also serving as Deputy Head of the Disaster Management Commission, Coordinator of the Government’s Agriculture and Rural Development Cluster and as a member of the Board of the Microfinance Investment Support Facility for Afghanistan (MISFA). In this period, he also played a key role in the planning phase of security transition.

Before his appointment as MRRD’s Minister, Mr Barmak served as MRRD’s Deputy Minister, Programs, before which he was Executive Director of the National Solidarity Program (NSP), responsible for oversight of USD 285 million in annual funding. His earlier roles included Senior Advisor, Policy Program and Chief Coordinator of the National Rural Access Program (NRAP), and Senior Adviser on Capacity Development and Programs at MRRD.

Between 1995 and 2002, Mr Barmak served in key managerial and leadership positions with a number of international organizations, including UNDP, UNOCHA and ACBAR, among others.
Mr Barmak is an MSc graduate in Development Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London, having previously obtained a BSc with Honours in Architecture from Kabul University.
